The annual “tornado of swallows” is one of the most intriguing natural phenomena of the lower river valley. Every September, flocks of migrating tree swallows numbering tens of thousands of birds roost on the islands at the mouth of the Connecticut River. Whirling in the twilight sky, the huge flocks then descend, all at once, into the reeds for the night.
We will be leaving from Old Lyme.
As parking limited, you may need to carpool from the Old Lyme commuter lot after unloading boats.
It will be dark upon our return trying to load, BRING HEADLAMPS, deck lights or lanterns and warm clothes for the chilly evening

Calling all witches and wizards to come "Ride the Tide" in Witch's Style and paddle down the Housatonic River for the third annual Witches Paddle this October 19th, 2024
Meetup at 1:00PM in your best witch costume (witch costume required) for a paddle down the Housy (ride the tide with the outgoing current) leaving from Sunnyside school in Shelton and ending at Dockside Brewery in Milford. Most plan to stay for a bite to eat and drink.
*We will unload at one of two locations. On the dockside dock, which is quite high, fine for paddleboards and sit on top kayaks, however some people like to end at the State boat ramp and dock just before Dockside for an easier unload if they have a sit inside kayak. Completely up to you. They are very close to each other.
**This is a 7 mile paddle (approximately), please be prepared to paddle a long distance and prepare for weather conditions as it may get chilly at this time of year. I would highly recommend a change of clothes or layers in dry bags, snacks, lots of water, etc. It feels much easier traveling with the current than a normal seven mile paddle- trust.
***Everyone is responsible for figuring out your own carpool coordination. This is a ONE WAY PADDLE so we end in a different location than starting. I unload at Sunnyside and then drop vehicle off at Dockside and get a lift back to Sunnyside so that I do not need to go back after for a vehicle.

It's a casual leaf peeping trip and not difficult (fast) but strenuous (long) please no first timers or anyone with injuries that prevent completing paddle distance of 10 miles
Please bring your own lunch and plenty of water
BYO Please bring a PFD and whistle
Please bring your sense of fun and adventure
It is cold this time of year so dress appropriately wetsuits/drysuits and booties recommended. Dress in layers. Change of clothes in dry bags, etc.
We stop at Ferris Acres for Ice Cream (Apple Crisp Sundae for me) if anyone wants to add that to their itinerary. It is a delicious and welcome addition to the day and well deserved. No-guilt calories after a long paddle.

Hands down, the best way to start a Tuesday. Listen to a specially curated playlist made to move to that only we can hear so as not to bother anyone else around. Join us on the beach for a half hour holistic approach to fitness, combining physical activity with the benefits of nature and social interaction for a healthy body and mind. Music and high quality noise cancelling headphones provided. Set the volume to your liking. Sway, sit, dance or jump around. Let the music move you however you feel- BYO coffee.
Dancing is a fantastic cardiovascular exercise that gets your heart pumping and blood flowing! The sand adds an extra challenge, as it requires more effort to move through, giving you a more intense workout without even realizing it.
Morning sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D which is essential for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation as well as collagen production! It is linked to a reduced risk of certain autoimmune diseases, respiratory infections, and other illnesses. It also helps synchronize your body's internal clock to regulate hunger hormones, potentially reducing the risk of weight gain and metabolic disorders and leads to better more restful sleep.
The combination of dancing, fresh air, and the sight of water can be incredibly soothing and stress-reducing. It helps release endorphins, the body's natural “feel-good” chemicals, which can improve your mood and overall sense of well-being as well as increased energy and alertness.
Dancing in a group setting like a silent disco encourages social interaction and can boost your mental health. Connecting with others and sharing the joy of dancing can be uplifting and energizing.
Calorie Burning: Depending on the intensity of your dancing, you can burn a significant number of calories during a silent disco dance party on the beach. It's a fun way to stay active and burn off excess energy.
